2.2 What is HTML?
To publish information for global distribution, one needs a universally understood language, a kind of publishing mother tongue that all computers may potentially understand. The publishing language used by the World Wide Web is HTML (from HyperText Markup Language).

HTML gives authors the means to

Publish online documents with headings, text, tables, lists, photos, etc.
Retrieve online information via hypertext links, at the click of a button.
Design forms for conducting transactions with remote services, for use in searching for information, making reservations, ordering products, etc.
Include spread-sheets, video clips, sound clips, and other applications directly in their documents.

HTMLは文書表示を目的としているのだから、[基本的に文体はHTMLの仕様から超越しているべきだと私は思います。]というのは当たり前の話。(http://deztec.jp/design/index.html (9/11))
文章構造を表現したいのであれば、それはXHTMLで吸収されるよう行動すべき。

なんにしても、なんらかのデータ処理で文章構造を意識しないのであれば、過剰仕様（なくても同じ）。電子ブックが一般的になると話は違ってくるかな、という気もする。
